"When visiting New York or Los Angeles for the first time, many people are struck with a deja-vu feeling of having been there and seen it all before. Through Hollywood films, such places have planted themselves in our collective memory. The artist Tom Hackney recently visited and photographically recorded Los Angeles sites that have been immortalised in movies. On returning to Britain, he then reproduced the photographic images in oil paint. A real place becomes a mythological memory, then it is re-fixed in an instantaneous image, then it is peculiarly transformed through a lengthy and painstaking process into something else, perhaps an icon of unreality. Hackney's attention to every glimmer and soft-focus detail brings it all off."
